The Perfect Kid: What if Parenting is NOT About Tricks & Techniques (Deuteronomy 6:4 - 9)

Parenting is a journey unlike any other. It is filled with joy and celebration, as well as sadness and frustration. It is a 24/7 job that never ends, even when the kids move out.

The perfect kid is an elusive idea in every parent's dreams. Thousands of books have been written and expert after expert has lined up to tell us how to raise the perfect child. Yet, it seems that no matter what we do, perfection is always out of our grasp.

What if, we have gone about it all wrong? What if parenting is not about the latest techniques but about something deeper, something beneath the surface?

Big Idea
Parents are to go for one thing in their child's life, their
heart. According to Scripture, it is the only thing that matters.

Recommend Resources

*Gospel Powered Parenting (William Farley)

Next Steps
*Begin a relationship with Jesus
*Memorize Ephesians 6:4
*Baptism
*Newcomer's Brunch
*New Believers Class
*Partnership Class

some questions to help you: 1. What do you worry about the most? 2. What if I failed or lost would make life not worth living? 3. What do I do to cope or feel better? 4. What do I daydream about? 5. The city of Jerusalem in the book of Nehemiah very closely resembles what the church is supposed to be. A light in a dark world, a voice calling out the culture to live life differently.

Big Idea:
The people of Jerusalem observe the Day of Atonement and the Feast of Booths. It is these reminders in Israel’s history of God’s love and forgiveness that show us that we need Jesus, not religion.·

How to Be Rich: Finding Freedom (Matthew 6:16-18)

In this day and age, most people are striving for more…a better job, a larger house, a flashier car, and the list goes on.

There is more to life than chasing that elusive carrot that dangles so temptingly in front of you. Discover how to be truly rich, with what you already have.

In our “get it now” culture, fasting reminds us to focus on Jesus. While we fast we are drawn away from the provision and toward the provider.

How To Be Rich: Counterfeit Gods (Matthew 6:5-15)

In this day and age, most people are striving for more…a better job, a larger house, a flashier car, and the list goes on.

There is more to life than chasing that elusive carrot that dangles so temptingly in front of you. Discover how to be truly rich, with what you already have.

When we examine how we use our time and money, we can identify areas that we have replaced God with an idol.

Here is the list of questions Josh shared tonight to discern your idols:

What do I worry about the most?
What if I failed or lost would it make me not want to live?
What do I do to cope or feel better?
What do I think most easily about?
What preoccupies me?
What do I daydream about?
What makes me feel the most self worth?
What do I want to be known for?
What prayer unanswered would seriously make me think about turning away from God?
What is my hope for the future?
What are the clear paths of disobedience in my life?

In this day and age, most people are striving for more…a better job, a larger house, a flashier car, and the list goes on.

There is more to life than chasing that elusive carrot that dangles so temptingly in front of you. Discover how to be truly rich, with what you already have.

How you use the resources that God has entrusted you with is a litmus test of your maturity in Christ. Faithful stewardship begins by realizing that God doesn’t need our money but we need His blessings.

Accidental (Hebrews 13)

The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians who were being persecuted for their faith. They were thrown in prison, made fun of, sometimes killed for following Jesus. In the midst of this, they wanted to go underground, fade into the shadows. The writer of Hebrews writes to them, encouraging them to not quit, to stay above ground, to continue following Jesus in the midst of persecution. The reason: Jesus. He points to Jesus over and over as the reason to stick with it, to continue in the midst of persecution. He tells them, “It’s about Jesus. It’s always about Jesus. It’s only about Jesus.”

Echoes of a Voice (Hebrews 12:1-3)

The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians who were being persecuted for their faith. Thrown in prison, made fun of, sometimes, killed for following Jesus. In the midst of this, they wanted to go underground, fade into the shadows. The writer of Hebrews writes to them, encouraging them to not quit, to stay above ground, continuing following Jesus in the midst of persecution. The reason: Jesus. He points to Jesus over and over as the reason to stick with it, to continue in the midst of persecution. He tells them, “It’s about Jesus. It’s always about Jesus. It’s only about Jesus.”

During the audio of this message you may hear a rhythmic hum in the background. As an object lesson in endurance, there was a young man running on a treadmill behind Josh throughout the message.

Many of us live as if this as all there is, but what if there was more? What if life doesn’t end here? What if there is something after we die? Does that change anything? These are just a few of the questions we wrap up this series with.

Leave a Mark

All of us want to be known for something, we want to be remembered for something, but what will it be? At your funeral, what will people say about you? What will your spouse, your kids, your family and friends remember about you? What will you pass on to those around you? These are just a few of the questions that Josh breaks down in this message.

Today is Your Someday

Have you ever said, “I’ll do that someday” “We should go there someday” “We should do that someday.” It is always somewhere down the road and what happens is we build up a pile of somedays. What if today was your someday? How do you live a life that does something today instead of waiting for someday?

Living the Dash

There are 2 numbers we all have, the year that we are born and the year that we die. In between those numbers on our tombstone is a dash, what does it mean to live the dash? How do you live life to the fullest, taking advantage of every moment, being fully alive in those moments and making the most of your one and only life?

Choose to Live

What if you found out that you only had 30 days left to live? Would that change anything? C.S. Lewis said, “The day you are born is the day you begin to die.” All of our lives are counting down whether we realize it or not. In that moment when we realize that, we make a choice: to either live life to the fullest or let life happen and slowly die. As we start our brand new series, Josh breaks down how to choose to live, how you choose to make the most of every moment, how to not miss anything to and be fully alive.

Becoming...Loving

All of us love people like us, but what about the people not like us? Are we supposed to love them? As we celebrate Christmas Eve, Josh shows that when Jesus came to earth, he came to show a new way forward, a new way to live and a new way to love. How would your life be different if you actually loved the people in your life, unconditionally? What if you loved the people who hurt you the most? What about the people not like you, what would happen if you became more loving?

Becoming...Communal

Community is a buzzword in all parts of life. The bottom line though is that we were created to “know and be known, love and be loved.” But how do you take that crucial first step letting people in? Why should you take that step? What does community look like at Revolution? These are just a few questions that Josh breaks down in this important message as we think about our world, Revolution and how “we fit in.” How would your life be different if you became more communal?

Our lives are complex, busy and overloaded. Many churches function this same way. One of the core values of Revolution is to be simple. We want to do a few things and do them well.
Becoming...Worshipful

We all worship something, whether we believe it or not. How do you know what you worship? Look at where you spend your time and money. Those are our two most important and personal commodities. Next question, are you worshiping the right things? In this message, Josh looks Genesis 22, where the word worship is used for the first time in the Bible to see how God defined worship from the beginning and what that means to us. How would your life be different if you became more worshipful?
