Weird: How Do I Know If I'm a Follower of Jesus? (1 Peter 1:13-21)

When you hear the word weird, images of Lady Gaga come to mind, or if you are older, Weird Al. Weird is something you do in our culture to define yourself, to stand out, in an effort to be indefinable by friends and family, to beat to your own drum.

According to the Dictionary, Weird means something or suggesting something involving the supernatural, unearthly or uncanny, fantastic or bizarre.

According to Scripture, when someone thinks of a follower of Jesus, the word weird should come to mind. According to 1 Peter 2, we are aliens, exiles on earth.

This spring at Revolution Church, we are going to preach through the books of 1 & 2 Peter and look at this idea of being weird. We will look at how we truly follow Jesus in a way that causes people to ask questions, in a way that says we don’t belong. We will do this by looking at how we live when it comes to trial and pain, submitting to authority (godly and ungodly), in marriage, as a single, when dealing with sin in our lives and to finish off 2 Peter, we will spend 4 weeks looking at how this topic deals with heaven, hell and the afterlife.

You can find the study guide for this series at http://www.tucsonrevolution.com/mediafiles/weird-study-guide.pdf

Big Idea:
*Followers of Jesus are defined by the hope they have in the gospel, not their past sins or identities, but a new identity.

Next Steps:
*Get baptized on February 11th

Big Idea:
*We place our hope for love, security and peace in people, careers, money, sex and relationships. Yet, only one thing can bring us the hope we long for.
Questions for discerning the idols of your heart:
1. What do I worry about?
2. What do I use to comfort myself when life gets tough or things don't go my way?
3. What, if I lost would make me think life wasn't worth living?
4. What do I daydream about?
5. What makes me feel the most self-worth?
6. What do I lead with in conversations?
7. Early on, what do I want to make sure people know about me?
8. What prayer, unanswered would seriously make me consider walking away from God?
9. What do I really want and expect out of life?
10. What is my hope for the future? What will complete me?

Next Steps:
*Memorize 1 Corinthians 15:57 - 58
*Work through the "Idol of the Heart" questions

Hope: The Megaphone of Hope (John 17:1-4)

Life isn't easy. We experience problems and setbacks every day. But during the hardest parts of life, when the bottom seems to fall out, where do we turn for peace? Although God doesn't offer any easy solutions, He does offer Himself and His cross as an anchor of hope no matter what we face in life. And more than simply enduring suffering, the hope we find in Him allows us to leverage our darkest moments for His fame. When life hurts most, the world listens most intently to our message, allowing us to broadcast through our pain the goodness of the One who loves us the most.

On December 31 and January 7, we will start a new year at Revolution with a 2 week series called Hope When Life Hurts the Most. We will explore what we do when we hit rock bottom.

Big Idea:
* Our confidence in the hope we have in Christ during the hard times is powerful enough to point others to God.

Light and Shadows: Hero (Jude 1:24-25)

As we head into the Christmas season at Revolution Church, we will be spending 3 weeks going through the book of Jude. Because we are celebrating the birth of Christ, Jude is a great book to look at. The reason is that Jude calls followers of Jesus to contend for the faith, to persevere and live differently because of what Jesus did.

One of the main themes of Jude, a book that takes up one page in the Bible, is that it is easy for our culture and sin to pervert our belief. This is seen most clearly in the month of December, as we near Christmas. Followers of Jesus say Scripture calls us to be generous, to be humble, to live a pure lifestyle (which is true), but we don't always see that. We see followers of Jesus being stingy, greedy, spending thousands of dollars at Christmas.

What Jude shows us is how we live shows if the gospel has changed us, if we've been truly saved.

Big Idea:
*We are drawn to stories with heroes and even long for one in our own life. Scripture tells us that Jesus is the hero of our story, not us.

Manifest: Manifesting the Gospel in the World (Titus 3:1-15)

What does your life say about the gospel? Do people look at your life and think, "There's something different about their life. They live by a different standard, a different set of goals, dreams." Or do they see someone much like themselves: Living for themselves, their comfort, seeking to control their life, pursuing the American dream. These are some of the questions we'll encounter in the short New Testament letter, Titus. In it, the apostle Paul writes to Titus, one of his protege's and shares with him how to lead a young and growing church. Much like Revolution, Titus is a young church planter, in a city and he is striving to lead a community of people to be on mission to that city. To saturate that city with the gospel instead of the city saturating the church with their gospel.

Big Idea
* The reality of the gospel should be seen in the midst of our lives, actions, thoughts, and emotions.

Next Steps
* Memorize Titus 3:8

Big Idea
* God gives us a clear picture of how the gospel of Jesus not only transforms our homes, but how our homes and marriages move the gospel forward and change a neighborhood and then a city.

Every year, we do a vision series where we lay out clearly what Revolution is all about. This series is going to be where we go into even more detail about being a church planting church, what it takes to saturate the city of Tucson with the gospel and how our move to Missional Communities will help to facilitate that.

We will look specifically at what the New Testament calls us followers of Jesus to be and do, what we are called to as a church and how we live that out 7 days a week. Church is not something we do on Saturday's, it is something we are 7 days a week.

Uprising: The Purpose and the Power of the Gospel (Ephesians 2:1-10)

Every year, we do a vision series where we lay out clearly what Revolution is all about. This series is going to be where we go into even more detail about being a church planting church, what it takes to saturate the city of Tucson with the gospel and how our move to Missional Communities will help to facilitate that.

We will look specifically at what the New Testament calls us followers of Jesus to be and do, what we are called to as a church and how we live that out 7 days a week. Church is not something we do on Saturday's, it is something we are 7 days a week.

Big Idea
The gospel saves us from something (sin), for something (life).

Next Steps
* Memorize Romans 1:16 - 17

The Story of God: Jeremiah - A Heart for the City (Jeremiah 29:4 - 14)

For many Christians and people in our culture, the Old Testament is just that, old. It seems archaic, taking place thousands of years ago. It is involves a world we don’t understand, names we can’t pronounce, animal sacrifices, wars, famines. On top of that, God seems different than he does in the New Testament. In the New Testament, we see God as Jesus. He is loving, gracious, inviting and compassionate. In the Old Testament, God is often described as angry, wrathful, and vengeful. We identify with Jesus. Pastors preach about Jesus and spend more time in the New Testament. On top of that, the thinking goes, Jesus came and now we are under grace, not the law of the Old Testament, so what is the point of reading the Old Testament? We don’t sacrifice animals or stone people, so why read it?

The problem though is that the Old Testament makes up 75% of the Bible, yet so many Christians try to follow Jesus while only reading or knowing 25% of the Bible. For the next 5 months, at Revolution Church, we are going to walk through the Old Testament. We will look at the idea that not only is God the same through all of Scripture, but that you can’t have the New Testament without the Old Testament. The fit together like a lock and a key.

We will see how throughout the entire Bible, God has one mission, calls out imperfect, broken people to follow him and to bring his mission about through those people. We will see people just like us who God is able to use to change the planet. And through it all, we will begin to see more clearly The Story of God.

We will see people just like us who God is able to use to change the planet. And through it all, we will begin to see more clearly The Story of God.

The Story of God: Hosea - Relentless (Hosea 1:2 - 9, 3:1 - 5)

The Story of God: Noah - Grace Beats Sin (Genesis 6:5 - 9)

Big Idea
In the story of Noah, the ark and the flood, we see how much God hates sin but also how far he will go to give grace to those he loves.

Give. Me. Faith.: Does Prayer Really Work? (James 5:13 - 20)

Faith is a topic that many people wrestle with.

Is it a list of beliefs? Is it how we live? Is it both? We talk about having faith in God or people or ourselves, but is faith simply just in our heads? Is it something we can know for sure about?

Life can often seem out of control and we can feel like it is taking all the faith we can muster just to make it through the day.

As we walk through the book of James this spring, we will begin to see a God who provides for us, loves us, and empowers us to have the faith we need to make it through whatever life may throw our way.

Give. Me. Faith.: How to Tame the Tongue (James 3:1 - 12)

Salvaged (John 10:7 - 11)

Christmas is a time where we try to catch our breath, but it is also a time that we are reminded of what life isn’t like. After the hustle and bustle of getting ready for Christmas and everything quiets down at home, we have a moment when we think back over the year and wonder what happened.

Maybe you find yourself in the midst of marital difficulties and you feel like you are hanging on by a thread, you might be having difficulties financially, with your health or maybe you just feel like God is no longer with you, that He now seems to be silent in your life.

How do you move forward? How do you salvage everything to get to where you want to?

Join us at Revolution Church for our Christmas Eve service as we try to uncover how to salvage what has fallen apart.

Big Idea
The point of Christmas is that there is hope for a life that goes beyond what we dream possible.

Next Steps
* Begin a relationship with Jesus
* I'm not ready to begin a relationship with Jesus, but I'd like to take the step of letting go of my dreams, past hurts and pain
* Come back on January 8th

The Blessed Life: The Secret to Life (Philippians 4:10-23)

Everyone wants to be happy. We look for it in friends, kids, marriage, sex, money, stuff, and career. Yet, less than half of Americans are happy with their jobs, only 20% of married couples are happily married.

No one seems to be happy.

But what if we have missed the point? What if we are not looking for happiness? For most people The Blessed Life has everything to do with happiness and that happiness comes from more stuff.

What God calls us to and the point of the book of Philippians is to fight for and look for joy. Joy is different from happiness. It is not fleeting or tied to temporary things. It does not come and go. It is based on God and who He is.

The Blessed Life: What to Do with Worry (Philippians 4:6-9)

What God calls us to and the point of the book of Philippians is to fight for and look for joy. Joy is different from happiness. It is not fleeting or tied to temporary things. It does not come and go. It is based on God and who He is.

Ultimate Fighter: Fight to the End (2 Timothy 4:6 - 22)

When it comes to faith and following Jesus, fighting is not something that often comes to mind. Yet, Scripture makes it very clear that to make it to the end of our lives and still be faithful and following Jesus, we must have the mentality of an Ultimate Fighter.

For the next few weeks, we will be going through the book of 2 Timothy and looking at how you follow Jesus in the midst of pain, suffering, when life doesn’t make sense, how you have faith when the world around you seems to be caving in. We will also be looking at whether there is a point to the pain in our lives and what the gospel has to say about those things.

Building a City Within the City: Fathers & Fighting (Nehemiah 13:23 – 31)

The book of Nehemiah is the story of one man who God called to lead a movement to restore the city of Jerusalem. The city of Jerusalem in the book of Nehemiah very closely resembles what the church is supposed to be. A light in a dark world, a voice calling out the culture to live life differently.

Big Idea:
Nehemiah lays out three things God calls men to be as followers of Jesus.
These are non-negotiables for men.

Building a City Within the City: Dedication & Delight (Nehemiah 12:27 – 43)

The book of Nehemiah is the story of one man who God called to lead a movement to restore the city of Jerusalem. The city of Jerusalem in the book of Nehemiah very closely resembles what the church is supposed to be. A light in a dark world, a voice calling out the culture to live life differently.

Big Idea:
We need to remove all of the idols in our lives so that we can fully follow Jesus and be on mission with Jesus in our world.

Next Steps:
*Begin a relationship with Jesus
*Memorize Romans 12:1 - 2
*Work through the questions this week to discern my idols. Here are
some questions to help you: 1. What do you worry about the most? 2. What if I failed or lost would make life not worth living? 3. What do I do to cope or feel better? 4. What do I daydream about? 5. What makes me feel the most self worth? 6. What do I want to be known for? 7. What prayer unanswered would seriously make me think about turning away from God? 8. What is my hope for the future?
